4 WAYS TO STAY SUN SMART FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS 

Construction sites are often exposed to extreme sunlight, lacking any kind of natural shade. Therefore, it is vital that you follow the 4 steps below to ensure you are protected from the harsh summer heat and stay safe while working on any construction site. 

  1. SUN LOTION 

Applying sun cream at regular intervals (every 2 – 3 hours).  This acts as a protective layer deflecting UV rays emitted from the sun and protecting you from the sun’s heat, not to mention skin cancer. 

  1. WATER 

Water is your best friend, especially due to the physical nature of site work, is vital to your body’s performance and overall health.  You need to be consuming a minimum of 2 litres of water per day! 

Remember – most energy drinks, sodas and coffee etc offer minimal hydration and high levels of sugar – best to avoid or drink twice as much water! 

  1. FOOD 

This hot weather can be a real strain for the human body so it is important that you take extra care of yourself.  One way is to take care when choosing what you are going to eat.  When possible chose lean high protein foods (e.g. chicken or turkey), in addition to foods rich in vitamins (e.g. fruit and vegetables) and to avoid sugary or salty snacks.   

    4.TEAM WORK

During the hot spell, it is best to work as a team to ensure that you all stay safe on site.  Be alert to any strange behaviour that could be a sign of heat stroke and take the appropriate action – early signs include disorientation, slurred speech, unresponsiveness and general clumsiness etc. 

Remember to stay safe on site always and put your safety above anything else!
